Liverpool have opened talks to sign Kevin Strootman from Roma, according to reports in Italy.

Jurgen Klopp is in the market for midfield reinforcements after Philippe Coutinho’s £142 million move to Barcelona was completed over the weekend.

According to Premium Sport, Liverpool have held primary discussions over a deal for Strootman this month.

It’s claimed that Roma are open to offers for the Netherlands international, who was wanted by Louis van Gaal during his first summer at Manchester United in 2014.

Liverpool have yet to submit an offer, but Roma would consider selling the midfielder during the January transfer window.

The Serie A club tried offloading Strootman last summer in their efforts to sign Juan Cuadrado from Juventus, but they were unable to strike a deal with the Serie A champions.
