Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has returned to training as he seeks to prove his fitness ahead of this weekend’s visit of Arsenal.

The Croatian has been absent with a knee problem, missing since his club’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea on January 31.

What at the time seemed a minor setback has kept him out for the past three fixtures. He sought medical advice in Germany last week in an effort to cure the issue.

It remains to be seen if he can recover in time to face the Gunners, but manager Jurgen Klopp will be eager to improve his defensive options.

He has used Lucas Leiva in the centre-back role recently, the Brazilian excelling against Harry Kane when Liverpool defeated Spurs, but exposed against pacier strikers against both Hull and Leicester City when his side was comfortably beaten.

Klopp could also consider a recall for Ragnar Klavan, but will give Lovren every chance to prove he is ready to return.

Liverpool still expect to be without captain Jordan Henderson for the visit of Arsene Wenger’s side.
