Jürgen Klopp today offered an update on Dejan Lovren’s fitness and confirmed the centre-back is currently training freely with no injury concerns.

The 28-year-old was rested from Croatia’s 1-1 draw with Finland in World Cup qualifying on October 6, but returned to play 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory in Ukraine three days later.

Lovren also sat out of Liverpool's clashes with Manchester City and Burnley in September due to fitness concerns.

Asked about reports the No.6 was suffering with an ongoing back issue, Klopp told his pre-Manchester United press conference at Melwood: “We had [to manage him], that’s true. He had back problems, they lead to groin problems.

“If we would come out every day and tell [you] when the players have pain but are still training, you cannot imagine how often that would be. That’s why we have a big medical department and they are always working with the players. Sometimes it makes them available and sometimes not.

“Yes, it’s true he couldn’t train and that’s why he didn’t play the first game for Croatia. We told him and the Croatian FA that it would really make sense if they left him out of the first game because he needed a few days’ rest. In this moment it looks like that was enough, but we couldn’t give him that rest in that moment.

“We managed it but he was always match-fit, otherwise he would not have played of course. He played the second game, 90 minutes, he’s back, everything looks fine and that’s it.

“It was no problem yesterday, it was no problem the day before yesterday. I don’t know how it will be in a few days, but in the moment everything is good.”
