Dejan Lovren felt all of the elements came together to make Liverpool's 3-0 win in Sydney 'fantastic' for players and fans alike.

The Reds secured a straightforward victory over A-League champions Sydney FC in their post-season friendly, courtesy of first-half strikes by Daniel Sturridge, Alberto Moreno and Roberto Firmino.

More than 70,000 supporters watched on from the stands at the ANZ Stadium, which played host to a unique match – with club legends Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman joining the first team on the pitch.

“It’s always great to be back in Australia,” Lovren told Liverpoolfc.com.

“When you see the crowd here, 72,000 today and everything red, it’s great to be back with such a warm welcome. And I’ve seen a lot of Croatian people. It’s fantastic.

“Last time we were here was two years ago. When we have the opportunity to come, we are always grateful to come. We took the opportunity. It’s not so long but we’ll enjoy these two days here.”

Lovren partnered Carragher in central defence during the opening 45 minutes, with Gerrard an authoritative presence from the middle of the pitch.

Agger and McManaman were involved for their former club after the interval alongside a number of the younger players in Jürgen Klopp’s travelling squad.

“It’s always great to play with these legends. But it’s also a big opportunity for the young lads. For them, it’s a great opportunity,” Lovren reflected on the unique element of the game.

The fixture came just three days after Liverpool secured a spot in next season’s Champions League play-off round with a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.

Many of Klopp’s squad will represent their countries in the coming weeks, before – according to Lovren – a short break to recharge and try to progress further in 2017-18.

He said: “It’s still not yet finished. We have a couple of internationals; after that we can think about relaxing and a vacation.

“We have more to accomplish. Our target is again to be in the top four, to be more competitive in the next season and to achieve more. We are never satisfied with fourth place. But it’s a good thing for us to be back in the Champions League.”
